PUBLIC DECLARATION

The Regional Network for Risk Management in Central America (CRGR) through the Regional Gender Commission, is in favor of the comprehensive health of women in our region and calls on the authorities who are at the forefront of the pandemic by COVID-19, to guarantee the right to comprehensive health of women throughout their life cycle.

We agree that:

• Every May 28 the International Day of Action for Women’s Health is commemorated and in these moments of pandemic by COVID-19, it is essential to pay attention to the health of women who are the ones who are mainly in the care of homes and a large percentage in the health sector, located in the first line of care for the virus.
• It is necessary and urgent that the States implement and strengthen access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services such as: prevention and promotion programs in sexual health and rights and reproductive rights; secular and scientific comprehensive sex education; free universal access to contraceptive methods and antiretroviral treatments; and prevention and comprehensive care for sexual violence.

Therefore, we request:

• The effectiveness in the fulfillment of the Regional Contingency Plan «Central America United by the Coronavirus», is guarantor of the rights of women, so that the States assign resources for this population in all the axes of work and components that they develop said plan with gender indicators that promote its evaluation and execution.
• We demand that the right to health be guaranteed as a human right for women, which they must access during all stages of their lives, without restrictions or exclusions of any kind, and in all phases of emergency care: preparation, mitigation, response and humanitarian assistance.
• Emergency response protocols are implemented in the face of high rates of violence, which continue to place the Central American region as highly vulnerable to gender-based violence that women are enduring due to confinement measures that aggravate their risk status in the face of their attackers.
